Close to the Mexico-Guatemala border, Tapachula sits at the base of an extinct volcano called El Tacaná. Coffee plantations and other agriculture related businesses in the area provide the economic mainstay of Tapachula.
Some twelve miles south of Tapachula on the Pacific Ocean, Puerto Madero serves as the commercial port for crop transportation to domestic and foreign markets. The Mayan ruins at Izapa are located in the highlands of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas. The importance of this center is beginning to be uncovered. |
