The city of Palenque is a small village close to the Mayan ruins with the same name. Though its airport is used primarily for private aircraft, the feeder lines of Mexicana and Aeromexico planes have regular scheduled service.
As a Mayan site, Palenque is as impressive and important as Chichen-Itza, Tikal and Copán. It flourished in the fifth century AD and lies at the foot of a chain of low hills where the Sierra Madre meets the Usumacinta River flood plain. Pacal's impressive sarcophagus discovered in the early 1950's lies at the bottom of the Temple of the Inscriptions. His life-sized jade mask is displayed at the Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City. |
